Plain Beautiful Moments
There are some moments in life. There's no way to describe them but as perfect. Time stops for a moment. Even if it's the loudest place in the world, sound disappears. Your mind takes a photograph, records the smell, captures all of the subtleties and does everything to make sure that it can record and remember every single detail. Sometimes it's nature that catalyzes those moments, sometimes it's people and sometimes it's the self, but in these very complex moments where everything aligns, the joy and beauty and emotion they create is so simple. Marveling at how microscopic we are in the universe where we are treated to being able to witness the beauty of the planet, of the universe and of each other. A deaf couple flirting with each other. An unforgettable sunset as you're peering out a window with just the right song playing on your iPod. Silence in the woods, broken by a gentle breeze and the first note of a bird's song.
These are the gifts the world gives us.
A couple more movie reviews:
The Namesake
Tremendous tale of first and second-generation Indian-American immigrants. Kal Penn plays his part well, but is entirely eclipsed by the mother and father who put in some of the best performances I have ever witnessed on the silver screen. This is the drama version of Big Fat Greek Wedding, i.e. a tale that speaks to a universal non-American culture and its struggles in American society. Very much worthwhile--I recommend it strongly. I saw it at the East Village Theatre, which was really nice--they had Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Bars for sale at the concessions stand.
Transformers
Very entertaining. It's a shame that the battle sequences were too fast for you to follow anything, but they were still incredibly impressive. I wasn't expecting a cinematic masterpiece with sterling acting, and I wasn't disappointed. Everything was as good as it needed to be to not take away from the comic book story with the craziest special effects. See it if you like action flicks.
